Top: 241 new monographs evaluated in October! 2712 new titles for the ‘Archaeological Bibliography’

November 22, 2015 by

______________________________

This month we have evaluated 241 new monographs and their contents for the “Archaeological Bibliography”. You will find the list of new monographs (also in pdf) at the bottom of this post. But not only: Nearby is the list of the new periodicals referenced during last month. This list has been supplemented with links to the online editions of the respective journals – in addition to the links for the online resources. As you can observe, most of the volumes are very recent, from year 2015, and most of them are available as online editions. This stands for  a remarkable and very positive  change in the  “publication habit” of the last few years. Journals and scientific reviews  – by definition – publicate the “news” from the field of research. The online-editions in general are available more quickly than the print-versions, and on top the online-publications are identified usually by a DOI-links, which guarantee the digital availability of the document. The DOI for a document remains fixed over the lifetime of the document, whereas its location and other metadata could change.  Using these advantages of online publications,  journals are maintaining there important function as actual fora for discussion. We wish to remind you that in Dyabola you will find the DOI-links directly under the bibliographical reference. By “clicking” on the link, a new window will be opened showing access to the full text.

In October we have referenced 2712 new titles for the “Archaeological Bibliography”. Any advice and suggestions regarding content will be highly appreciated: please mail to Dr. Martina Schwarz. Concerning technical support please contact info@dyabola.de.

The major objective of  the “Archaeological Bibliography”, Dyabola is to offer a scientific search for literature. With the constant increase of publications and information it is becoming more and more difficult to gain an all-around overview of a particular field of research, the publications and therefore also of the state of research in this area. The Archaeological Bibliography, Dyabola wants to provide their users with excatly that. Through the search for subject heading you have the possibility to obtain an inclusive and  absolutely actual insight into your area of research.

The search for subject headings offers you about 30.000 subjects and keywords, which are orderd hierarchically, for a better understanding. You may “click” your way from e.g. “architecture” – “monuments” – “fortifications” to “frontier walls”. But please remember that a scientific research requires firstly an exact definition of its purpose. The term “frontiers” is found also under the the subject heading “topography”. In this case the reference is to the course of the frontier, but “frontier walls” under “architecture” to the method of construction. If it is necessary to cover both aspects, a search will have to be made under two different subjects. To refine your search it is possibile to combine results. Looking e.g. for the construction of frontier walls in Scotland (Hadrianswall) you may look for “topography” – “countries” – “Great Britain” – “Scotland”, then for  “architecture” – “monuments” – “fortifications” – “frontier walls” and then combine the two results using the Boolean operator “and”.

In September we have referenced 2764 new titles for the “Archaeological Bibliography”, evaluating 80 new volumes of periodicals and 171 monographs of all kind. You will find the list of new monographs (also in pdf) and periodicals below as ever. The list of the new periodicals has been supplemented with links to the online editions of the respective journals – in addition to the links for the online resources.Any advice and suggestions regarding content will be highly appreciated: please mail to Dr. Martina Schwarz. Concerning technical support please contact info@dyabola.de.

The summer holydays are ending. And we are back with a new update for the “Archaeological Bibliography”. Like every year during the summer part of our staff worked in the libraries of Munich covering an even broader spectrum of archaeological and classical literature. “Archaeological Bibliography” begins as mere subject-catalogue of the German Archaeological Instiute restricted on the library stock of one, admittedly excellent library for classical archaeology. Since 2005 Dyabola is expanding the ‘Archaeological Bibliography’, which by then references not only the current acquisitions of the Roman department of the German Archaeological Institute, but also those of the École Française de Rome, of the British School at Rome, the American Academy in Rome and of the Escuela Española de Historia y Arqueologia en Roma, gaining ca. 20.000 new titles a year, almost three times as many titles as before and more than six times as many as in the very begining. This result was improved when – two years later – we began to do some bibliographical work in the libraries of Heidelberg and Munich. We now usually provide ca. 28.000 – 30.000 new titles for the “Archaeological Bibliography” in the course of the year. As the “Archaeological Bibliography” is not any longer commited to one library only, it has no limits. Now the ideal – we are trying to archieve – is to reference all literature in the field of classical archaeology, which, of course, for now remains an ideal to follow.

In August we have referenced 1824 new titles for the “Archaeological Bibliography”.

2212 new titles in the ‘Archaeological Bibliography” in July. We support your research.

In the scientific discourse reviews are an important model of communication.  They are  formal assessments with the intention of instituting change if necessary. Using digital, open access publishing to facilitate and to speed up  this process of communication seems sensible. “Archaeological Bibliography” references the most important online review-journals like “Bryn-Mawr-Classical-Review” and the reviews of  the “American Journal of Archaeology“, “Histara“, “Sehepunkte” and “H-Soz-Kult”  (and a lot more) citing the respective links. By clicking on these links in the bibliographical reference, a new window will be opened showing access to the full text.

Additionally in July we have evaluated 163 new monographs and 73 new volumes of periodicals, gaining 2212 new titles for the “Archaeological Bibliography”. You will find the list of new monographs (also in pdf) and periodicals below as ever. The list of the new periodicals has been supplemented with links to the online editions of the respective journals – in addition to the links for the online resources.

Any advice and suggestions regarding content will be highly appreciated: please mail to Dr. Martina Schwarz. Concerning technical support please contact info@dyabola.de.
